Downloading, Unpacking and Using Life.exe

Return to Home Page...

The Life.exe Software Application is John Horton Conway's cellular Birth and Death Simulation for IBM Windows environment, and is available for free download.

After having downloaded and unzipped the Life.exe Application, drag the application to a suitable directory on your hard disc. Double click on the Life.exe icon to start it up, or right-click over it, choose the Option 'Create Shortcut', drag the Shortcut so-formed to the Desktop or a Folder, and double-click on that to start.

A window appears from which the 'SetUp' panel can be selected.

Select options from the 'SetUp' panel and then click on the 'OK' icon. Life.exe then displays a simulation of a grid with 'live' and 'dead' cells. The 'live' cells 'die' if they are isolated or overcrowded. Cells become 'live' if they have a given number of 'live' neighbours. The size of the grid is selectable.

Set up an initial pattern of live cells by clicking over the grid cells with the mouse pointer. Then choose 'Run Life' from the title bar menu to see how the pattern of cells evolves.

The Update Interval can be altered by the user (given in centi-seconds).

The game of 'Life' was invented by John Horton Conway, a Cambridge Mathematician.

Additional Help and a Description is available from the title bar menu.

Read the 'ReadMe1st.txt' file present in the zipped file for more information and conditions of use.
